Matt + Rachel | Chapel in the Hills Wedding
We met Matt and Rachel in January 2018 when we went to South Dakota to meet our new nephew that was just born. I asked my sister in-law if she knew any cute couples that would be up to model for us at the Badlands National Park, in the middle of January, in South Dakota. (you get why that’s a big deal, right?) So these two cuties agreed to model for us at sunrise on a bitter cold morning at the Badlands, where you are very exposed to the elements. We made it there in almost one piece, was one of the girls following us was a new driver and it was real icy, which didn’t make for a good combination - but we were all alive and unharmed, even if her car was not.
We hiked through the snow covered, windy Badlands and these two made magic with us and their love for one another - you’d never know how cold it was!
Several months later Rachel contacted me and let me know that they had gotten engaged, and they were planning a very spontaneous intimate wedding only two weeks later, and wanted to know if I was available. I jumped at the chance to shoot their day and made it official! The day before, right after work I hopped in my car alone, armed with serial killer podcasts and Twizzlers and drove 7 hours up to Rapid City, South Dakota. I arrived around midnight and stayed with my sister in-law.
The next day these two tied the knot at the most incredible wooden chapel called Chapel in the Hills, with their closest friends as witnesses. Their families were unable to make it cause of the short timeline, but they had a family reception in August for them! It rained almost the whole time we were shooting their bride and groom portraits, and as a cold and overcast day. Finally the light peeked through the trees right before their ceremony and I was so excited about the magic we were making! They married in the chapel, said their own vows to one another, planted a unity plant together, and sealed the deal with a kiss. At their reception they did the most awesome Spanish dance, had pie bites to celebrate, a photo booth, and gave out Kale as a favor since that’s their last name - and they dashed into their future together through a row of waving glow sticks. I am so excited to share these two’s day on here!
